Nikolaos EVANGELOPOULOS

Nikolaos Evangelopoulos as a visual artist, researcher and teacher in creative photography, in his research in the field of the meta-photography, he works on the constructed photography and its plasticity. The self-portrait, the figurative research of the body-space, the body as a fragment, the presence, the absence, the trace end the memory, are the important elements of his work, in his research in the field of the “meta-photography”.
Nikos Evangelopoulos with his photographic works, in situ installations and video that fit dynamically the site in which it is installed, leading the spectator in a figurative utopia. Uses the constructed image, the collage and the video productions in loop in a problematic on the image and myth in relation to the space.
Photographs become “tableau photographs”, photo-metaphors; they use their information like a form of writing, like shadows of ideas. In this context, the viewer encounters photographic works and collages created, sculptures created by layers of paper; in this manner realism, abstraction and randomness intertwine in a dialogue between art and life in either a poetic, a psychoanalytic or a narrative manner.
We can say about his work, quite simply, that the image becomes a drawing and at the same time the drawing becomes an image. These interchanges, which explore the limits of the image and its presence, have become an intrinsic part of the artist’s journey this past thirty years – an autobiographic search.
As he says, If we consider the body as a fragment, an extract into reality, a space which has every time different symbolisms and searches the limits necessary to construct its image, the body-figure can be defined as a “heterotopy”.

BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1964 in Athens, Greece. He lives and works in Paris, France.
Nikos Evangelopoulos as a visual artist, researcher and teacher in creative photography, he works on the “constructed photography” and its plasticity.
He recently participated in a collective work, La Méditerranée-Planète, for a new atlas of world history, published by Editions Mimésis, 2022.
He studied photography at the FOCUS School of Photography and Visual Arts in Athens and holds a Master 2 Research degree in Fine Arts (Arts Plastiques) from University of Paris VIII (Université Paris 8 Vincennes/Saint-Denis), France. He also received a scholarship for tutorials and workshops at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, West Surrey, Farnham, UK. He has realized a series of lectures and workshops in Greece and abroad. He has worked as a professional photographer and as photography professor, while he was also director of studies (1996-2005) at FOCUS School of Photography and Visual Arts. He has been photo editor of many publications and has worked as a photographer in museums and art spaces. Portfolio Reviewer for the European Month of Photography of Bratislava (2008), Slovakia. Also was a lecturer (2009-2019, as a contractual teacher of Fine Arts) at University of Paris VIII, ARTS, Plastic Arts Department, and he participated in the research group “Pôle Méditerranée” initiated by University Paris 8 Vincennes/Saint-Denis. He is also a member of “La Maison des Artistes” in France. He has participated in several personal or collective exhibitions (audiovisual installations, photography and mixed techniques).

Nikolaos Evangelopoulos est un artiste plasticien, chercheur et enseignant en photographie créative. Il explore l’image construite ou autrement dit, la plasticité de l’image.
Il a récemment participé à un ouvrage collectif, La Méditerranée-Planète, Pour un nouvel atlas d’histoire mondiale, paru aux Editions Mimésis, 2022.
Il a étudié la photographie à la FOCUS School of Photography and Visual Arts d’Athènes en Grèce et est titulaire d’un Master 2 Recherche en Arts Plastiques de l’Université Paris 8 Vincennes/Saint-Denis, France. Il a également reçu une bourse pour des tutoriels et des ateliers au Surrey Institute of Art and Design, West Surrey, Farnham, Royaume-Uni. Il a réalisé une série de conférences et d’ateliers en Grèce et à l’étranger. Il a travaillé comme photographe professionnel et comme enseignant de photographie d’art, tout en étant directeur d’études à l’École de photographie et d’arts visuels FOCUS (1995-2005). Il a été éditeur d’image et photographe professionnel indépendant pour galeries d’art, artistes et directeurs artistiques. Portfolio reviewer pour le Mois de la Photo de Bratislava, Slovaquie (2008).

Γεννήθηκε το 1964 στην Αθήνα. Ζει και εργάζεται στο Παρίσι της Γαλλίας.
Ο Νίκος Ευαγγελόπουλος είναι οπτικός καλλιτέχνης (visual artist) και ερευνά την “κατασκευασμένη φωτογραφία” ή αλλιώς την πλαστικότητα της εικόνας.
Σπούδασε φωτογραφία στη σχολή Φωτογραφίας και Οπτικών τεχνών FOCUS. Είναι κάτοχος Μaster 2 Recherche στις Πλαστικές Τέχνες από το Πανεπιστήμιο Paris8 (Université de Vincennes-Saint-Denis), ενώ έλαβε υποτροφία για παρακολούθηση σεμιναρίων και εργαστηρίων στο Surrey Institute of Art and Design, West Surrey, Farnham στην Αγγλία. Έχει πραγματοποιήσει σειρά διαλέξεων και εργαστήρια στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Εργάζεται ως επαγγελματίας φωτογράφος και καθηγητής φωτογραφίας, ενώ διετέλεσε και διευθυντής σπουδών (1996-2005) στη σχολή FOCUS. Επιμελήθηκε φωτογραφικά διάφορα έντυπα και δούλεψε ως φωτογράφος σε μουσεία και χώρους τέχνης. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, ενώ ήταν και Portfolio Reviewer για τον Μήνα Φωτογραφίας (2008) της Μπρατισλάβα στη Σλοβακία.
